Most South West Surrey Walkers activities are run on a regular basis to allow members to keep our dates free well in advance, even if the precise details have not been finalised. Normally there are two walks a month - on the first and third Sundays. This pattern will only be changed where it conflicts with other special SWSW activities such as holidays, or over Christmas and New Year; although additional walks may be included at any time. Similarly, social events are also held on a regular monthly basis, again to allow for forward planning!
The first Sunday of every month is normally a morning only walk, of approximately 5 to 7 miles in length. All walks are circular, starting and ending at the same place, which is usually a pub car park! Most morning walks start at 10:00 am but this may change depending on the length of the walk and the time of year, or to satisfy a pub's lunch arrangements. If the starting time is different from normal it will be emphasised in the walks programme.
The third Sunday of every month is normally a longer walk. This might be an extented circular walk, or a "figure of eight" (a morning walk and a different afternoon walk, both starting and ending at the same place, which again is normally a pub car park). The total length of these walks is usually 7 to 10 miles. Most walks start at 10:00 am but this may change.
Everyone is welcome on an SWSW walk but you must be reasonably fit. Normally there is no need to telephone
beforehand, just turn up at the start point. If you have a question about a particular walk just telephone
the leader of the walk for that day. Unless there are very special circumstances, all walks will start on
time so please aim to arrive at least 15 minutes prior to the advertised start time. Please do not phone
the walk leader to say that you are going to be late - it is not fair to keep 20 to 30 other walkers waiting!
It is very rare for a walk to be cancelled due to bad weather. Always assume that it will take place if you
are prepared to walk. Obviously ensure that you have suitable clothing for the weather likely to be encountered.
Our experience this year has been that in most cases the weather forecasts have been worse than that actually
encountered - so don't be put off unnecessarily, but if in
doubt check e-mails before starting !
Dogs may be welcome but please check with the walk leader for suitability before hand. Note that dogs must be kept under control at all times, particularly near livestock.
Our regular social activity is a monthly pub quiz at The Plough, Horsell which takes place on the 3rd Wednesday of every month. Up to 6 members are required for a team and SWSW will field at least one team each month. The cost to take part is only £1 per player and rumour has it that the teams coming first and second do actually win something! There is no need to ring first to say that you are coming. Try to arrive by 8:00 pm for an 8:30 pm start, as the pub soon fills up and you won't get a table. Contact Margo on 01483 767546 for additional information on the pub quiz.
