Walking with SWSW

South West Surrey Walkers "SWSW" is an informal group who get together for walks twice monthly. We ask members to organise and guide walks. We do not have professional walk leaders, and each person participating in the walk is responsible for their own safety. New members are welcome but please read our information and guidelines before you join us for a walk.

December 2017


Sunday 17th - Chantry Wood and Pewley Down

Start: 10:00 AM


Our meeting place: Start at entrance to Castle Grounds Guildford by the March Hare, 2-4 South Hill GU1 3SY. Parking is free on street on Sunday, suggest South Hill, Castle Hill, Pewley Hill Warwicks Bench and Fort Road (latter for those heading straight home after walk).


Details: Approx 5 1/2 miles. Walk through Castle Grounds, down to the river at Millmead, along the tow path to Ferry Lane, over the bridge across Shalford playing fields. Through Chantry Wood, descend to North Downs Way before ascending to Pewley Down with views towards Hogs Back. Return via Fort Road to town. Some ups and downs, bring poles if you normally use them, muddy in places. Small amount of road/pavement walking.


Lunch: Hot soup and mince pies at the end of the walk! (see email for details).


January 2018


Sunday 7th - Newark Priory and Wey Navigation

Start: 10:00 AM


Our meeting place: Ripley Green Car Park, Ripley. Turn north off the High St (B2215) opposite to Ripley Curry Garden and Jo Downs Handmade Glass (postcode GU23 6AY). Carry on along the lane a few hundred metres to grid ref TQ 05321 57081, by the Children's climbing frame.


Details: A 5.5 mile walk from Ripley, starting across the Green, then around a lake and via farm land to Paper court lock on the river Wey. From there we follow the meadows along the river, before walking past the ruins of Newark Priory. We then pass the 12th C Pyrford church, and return to Ripley via farmland, golf course and woodland. Generally easy walking -there are 2 short spells of road, all on pavement. One steepish but very short climb. Could be muddy in places after rain.


We may pass young cattle – they are well used to walkers but we recommend NO DOGS please.

Sunday 21st - Farnham and Caesars Camp

Our meeting place:: Upper Hart car park, The Hart, Farnham (the car park north of Waitrose Supermarket). Nearest postcode GU9 7HA, Grid reference: SU837470. Meet near the recycling bins.


Details: 6 miles around Farnham via Caesar’s Camp and Upper Hale. If the weather is clear we should be rewarded with good views from Caesar’s Camp over Fleet, Farnborough and beyond.


Lunch: Pub or cafe in Farnham to be decided on the day.

Sunday 4th - Cutmill Ponds - North Downs Way- Puttenham Common

Start: 10:00 AM


Our meeting place: Middle Car Park, Puttenham Common, (near Cutmill Pond), on minor road, Suffield Lane, between Puttenham and Elstead. GR SU 912457


Details: 6 miles, the walk is varied, passing through heathland, farmland and wooded areas, and is generally well drained. There are some fine views particularly from the upper Puttenham Common Car Park.
